Arcteryx gear review: Rho LT base layer

In the previous article we gave a high level overview of the available Arcteryx gear lines. We went over what some abbreviations and intended use of some more popular clothing items and now, it is time to get down to details. Perhaps, we will kick off our Arcteryx gear review with the Rho line. If you recall, Arc’teryx identifies this line as a base layer and makes two versions:  Rho LT and Rho AR.

Rho LT is meant to be a lightweight, moisture wicking base layer. It is made of Rentex Powerflex fabric which feels extremely soft and comfortable next to skin. I will go as far as to say that it was the softest poly material that I ever tried on. Another important feature of this layering piece is that Arcteryx Rho LT is a skin hugging base layer. I had to size up twice – still waiting for an XL item to see how it compares to my current L sized Rho LT – so you might do the same.

Even though Rho LT is extremely comfortable – you can also go for Rho LTW if you prefer wool to synthetic materials – I do not think that it is worth of $99. Yes, it has excellent quality and looks very stylish unless you want to stress your beer belly; however, it is still a baselayer. So try to find discontinued colors and coupons to find discounted pieces. Just for the record: I own two Arcteryx Rho Lt’s and all of them were bought for less than $60 including shipping!

Some potential sources where you can find this base layer:

Visit www.arcteryx.com and select a model/color that you like and click on “buy now.” A search should return a list of retailers selling that particular model/color. Then, Google up discount coupons: there is a good chance to get 15%-20% off.

Alternatively, check eBay and/or other used gear retailers such as geartrade.com.

Or, check out sites selling “demo” or “samples” arcteryx items:  one source to check is www.gearsamples.com.  And I am sure that there are other similar retailers.

And finally, your local sports retailer might have a lot of goodies hanging on a “sale” rack. I am talking about Moms-and-Pops shops where every spring and summer many items are put for sale. So, if you happen to be on a fishing trip in Vermont, check out a local ski shop. See if you can catch a good deal!
