2008/2009 Ski Resort Rankings Released

And a reason for a such bold statement is simple. First of all, almost all types of rankings are inherently controversial and should be taken with a grain of salt; and the same principle can be applied to the ski resort rankings. Just the other day I viewed rankings published by Skiing Magazine where Jay Peak was awarded the first place  the 2008/2009 ski season. (Please note: that since this article was published last year, we have a new set of rankings for the 2009/2010 ski season. Feel free to view and compare them here.) And on the very next day, I stumbled upon another set of rankings – this time published by Ski Magazine – and titled “Top 20 Eastern Resorts for 2008/2009″. According to their rankings, Jay Peak was also good enough to be featured at #…20!

By Skiing Magazine

1. Jay peak

2. Mad River Glen

3. Stowe

4. Sugarbush

5. Sugarloaf, Maine

6. Sunday River, Maine

7. Gore Mountain, NY

8. Killington

9. Okemo

10. Stratton

And by Ski Magazine

1. Tremblant, Quebec

2. Stowe ( ranked close enough, bingo… )

3. Sugarbush (pretty much the same place)

4. Sugarloaf ( sweeeeet ^2)

5. Whiteface, NY

6. Sunday River Glen

7. Smugglers Notch

8. Okemo ( Almost bingo, but still bravo!)

9. Holiday Valley, NY (Hmm?)

10. Seven Springs, PA ( double hmm)

20. Jay Peak Resort

only Stowe, Sugarbush and Sugarloaf were rated by both magazines at approximate the same places. For the rest of ‘em, it figures to be a long season ahead of  us :) !

I may be mistaken but the rankings aren’t conducted by the editors or writers of the two magazines, which I believe are published by the same publisher, but by their readers. Ski Magazine tends to be more “lifestyle” oriented. Skiing is more “hardcore”. Just look at the articles. Ski will have articles on best ski chalet…Skliing on the best backcountry and heli guides. It may be an oversimplification but Ski’s readers will skew more toward families than Skiing and Skiing will skew more toward young men. If all that is true, the rankings make perfect sense. The rankings that make sense to you depend on whether you are a Ski or Skiing demographic.

Yes, you are absolutely right. I also think that rankings will be a bit biased depending on a skier preferences. I, personally, agree on Stowe and Sugarbush rankings…Stowe is still too expensive for what it offers…

  3. Jay Peak #1 is right on! But #20 for ski magazine with Tremblant and Stowe for the top 2 spots. Those along with Whiteface and Killington are the most overrated and expansive resorts out east.

Where’s Mad River Glen, that’s the only place out East with terrain that is more difficult than Jay, but they don’t get the snow total that Jay does…
